La roque-sur-Cèze and surroundings

In the heart of the Cèze Valley, La Roque-sur-Cèze is a village 10 km from Bagnols-sur-Cèze and 30 km from Uzès. It is one of the most beautiful villages in France.

This small village was born on a rocky peak and enjoys a splendid view of the Cèze. On arriving at the medieval village, you will have to cross the 12-arched bridge nicknamed the "Charles Martel" bridge dating from the 13th century.

Please note that the village of La Roque-sur-Cèze is a pedestrian village, you will not be able to go by car; a car park is at your disposal at the bottom of it. This is a positive point for the inhabitants, you will not be disturbed by outside noise. This village in height offers an extraordinary peace and quiet.

At the bottom of the village, you will be impressed by the 12th century castle with its own Romanesque chapel which offers a beautiful esplanade surrounded by ancient ramparts. However, you will be able to contemplate it just from the outside since this castle is private property.

The beautiful parish church built at the end of the 19th century already offers a panorama of the superb vineyards below. You will take the calades (these stone paved alleys) to reach the highest viewpoint near the Château de la Roque-sur-Cèze. All along this walk, you will be charmed by the village houses made of blond stone which gives such a beautiful reflection during the summer days. These facades are also flowered by beautiful Mediterranean essences such as bougainvilleas or large cypress trees which provide a beautiful shade and a very natural and colourful atmosphere in the heart of the village. Moreover, some large murals are still visible at the corners of certain streets such as "la rue de la Magnanerie" which bears witness to its rich past through its silk activity.

Each village property offers an unparalleled view of the Cèze or the surrounding countryside thanks to its dominant position over the valley.

A few restaurants and bars surround the main square "la place Palou" and the atmosphere is there all year round. You will find shops in Bagnols-sur-Cèze or Cornillon just a few kilometres from the village.

Walking through the narrow streets of the beautiful village of La-Roque-sur-Cèze, you will discover beautiful village houses, properties and mas in the centre of the village of La-Roque-sur-Cèze, village house with garden or with a pretty courtyard. Very close to this magnificent village entirely where many village houses and properties are restored, one of the most remarkable natural sites of the region: the Sautadet waterfalls have found their place in the heart of the Cèze. This site is really worth the detour.

Only 7 km away in the small village of St-Paulet-de-Caisson, a former monastery dating from the beginning of the 13th century has been classified as a Historical Monument named: La Chartreuse de Valbonne. This monument is remarkable for its size and its magnificent glazed tile roof. You can also contemplate it from the inside with its vaulted ceilings. This former monastery offers nearly 40 hectares of forest filled with vines. At the end of the visit, you will be able to take part in some tastings of AOC Côtes de Rhône wines.

Finally, this village is very remarkable for its rich heritage and its freshness that it offers thanks to the Cèze, this beautiful river passing near the village from where its Roque-sur-Cèze.
